The Israeli army fired stun grenades and tear gas on Friday at hundreds of Palestinians who were trying to reach East Jerusalem through a military checkpoint East of Bethlehem to attend prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque for the third Friday in the holy fast month of Ramadan.

A female journalist who was covering the event was also hit by a stun grenade in the back and was treated at the location.

Over 250,000 Palestinians are expected to attend the Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest places, in Jerusalem’s Old City. Tens of thousands of Palestinians from all over the West Bank have gathered at checkpoints around Jerusalem since the early hours hoping to get a chance to reach Al-Aqsa Mosque in time for the prayers.
