Trump’s Golan Move Aimed at Helping Netanyahu Win April Vote: Analyst“the recognition of israeli sovereignty over the golan heights was a semantic exercise, which changed nothing orchestrated by two politicians desperate to survive attempts to remove them from office. it reminded me of two drowning men in the middle of the ocean, clinging to each other in desperation. trump has gotten a reprieve; netanyahu may still be indicted for corruption,” e. michael jones, a political analyst in the us state of indiana, told tasnim.

eugene michael jones is an american writer, former professor, media commentator and the current editor of culture wars magazine.

following is the full text of the interview.

tasnim: breaking with decades of international consensus, trump on monday formally recognized israeli "sovereignty" over the occupied golan heights, a border area the tel aviv regime seized from syria in 1967. what’s your take on this?

jones: the recognition of israeli sovereignty over the golan heights was a semantic exercise, which changed nothing orchestrated by two politicians desperate to survive attempts to remove them from office. it reminded me of two drowning men in the middle of the ocean, clinging to each other in desperation. trump has gotten a reprieve; netanyahu may still be indicted for corruption. this empty gesture united the world against the us and israel.

tasnim: how should the international community and the un react to this?

jones: the world community should reaffirm its commitment to the rule of law and rededicate its efforts to restore the golan heights to its rightful owners.

tasnim: reports suggest that trump will recognize the west bank as israeli territory in his next move. do you believe so?

jones: now that the threat of the mueller inquiry has been called off, trump may be less inclined to do everything the jews want in order to stay in office.
