US Approves $39M Sales of Anti-Tank Missiles to UkraineCongressional aides said final approval of the sale of the Javelin missiles is expected to be announced soon after both Republicans and Democrats signed off on the proposal. The aides spoke on condition of anonymity because the sale is not final.

It was first reported Tuesday by Bloomberg News. The State Department declined to comment.

Ukraine requested the missiles earlier this year. It is not part of the aid that was delayed as President Donald Trump pressed the Ukrainian president to investigate his political rival.

The Javelin missile is manufactured by a joint venture of Lockheed Martin, based in North Bethesda, Maryland, and Raytheon Co., which has its headquarters in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Russia's Foreign Ministry, however, said the missile sale will not help Ukraine's defense capabilities, but will dent the country's budget.

"What Ukraine really needs today is a settlement of the internal Ukrainian conflict, an end to the crisis in many fields, a better situation in the economy and struggle against corruption, the harmonization of internal political processes and the search for identity," said the ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova.

Russia has consistently warned Washington against providing the country with weapons over concerns of escalation of the conflict in the east, which has so far claimed the lives of some 13,000 people since 2014.
